Output
There are 2 different ways in which the GOFR program will output its results. You choose between them in step 4 of the main screen.
1. Destination Folder
Click Select Destination Folder For Results (or drag a folder into step 4, see Drag & Drop).
When you select an output folder as the destination the program will find all applicable office and text documents in the input folder you selected, perform any substitutions, and copy them into this folder.
Output folder cannot be a part of the input folder path, and none of the files you selected in step 2 can be in it.
If you select the check box labeled Keep Input Subfolders: subfolders in the input directory will be automatically created in the output directory to match the input. Otherwise ALL the files in ALL subfolders in your input directory will be written into 1 output directory.
For example, if you selected an input folder labeled C:\Temp\ and you selected an output folder called C:\Output, any file in the C:\Temp\ folder will be copied to the output.
If there is a file called C:\Temp\Test\mydoc.docx in the input folder, and you selected the Keep Input Subfolders checkbox, the output will be C:\Output\Test\mydoc.docx.
If you did not check the Keep Input Subfolders checkbox, the output will be C:\Output\mydoc.docx.
Files that you added one by one with Add Files (not as part of a folder) are always written directly into the output folder.
Two settings in the Advanced Settings also affect the output folder:
- Include parent folder keeps the entire original directory tree of the input file below the output folder, and overrides Keep Input Subfolders.
- Write unchanged files to output directory controls if a file in which nothing was changed is still copied to the output folder.
2. Overwriting originals
Check Overwrite Original Files to overwrite your originals after the substitution is performed. The program asks you to confirm. This action is final and cannot be undone.
We highly recommend that you run the program using Destination Folder (1) first to see how the substitutions are performed.
Please make sure that you have a good backup of your document(s) before performing this step as it is final.
Overwriting originals is not available in the trial version.
A note on backup: The program will perform an automatic backup of your files if you select Overwrite Original Files, and by default place them in the following directory:
C:\Users\<Your Name>\AppData\Local\Exis,LLC\Backups
You can change the location of the backups to anywhere you like by going into the Advanced Settings section, Backup Options tab.
There is a setting that will turn off the backups such as when the input is excessively large. You can turn off the backup by going here: Advanced Settings.
The log file
After a run, View Log File opens the log of the run and Open Result Folder opens the folder with the results. The directory of the log files is shown in step 4, see Welcome to Global Office Find and Replace.
